MY PROCESS
Most of my ideas come from everyday life mixed with a bit of wild imagination. Sometimes it’s a movie, sometimes it’s something I notice while having coffee. For example, The Baa-Baa Barber came to me while watching The Barber of Seville and I thought, why not a goat holding scissors, full of operatic flair? Tosca’s Temptation began after I saw Tosca and imagined a cheetah dancing flamenco, dramatic and elegant!
Other ideas appear when I am out and about. I see people walking their dogs, wearing sunglasses and scarves and I can’t help thinking, what if the dogs were just as stylish? That’s how many of my characters are born: animals with confidence, humour and a touch of attitude.
Once an idea sticks, I sketch it roughly and then move to canvas. I paint in acrylics, usually on linen canvas, layering colour and detail until the animal’s personality starts to show.
I love painting on a large scale. Big canvases let me dive right in. There is space to explore every texture, every expression, every brushstroke. The work feels alive and the size gives it presence.. when you stand in front of it, you don’t just look at it, you feel it.
I often paint outdoors. The light is real, the colours are honest and it keeps me connected to nature. The final varnish is always my favourite part, it brings the painting to life, adding depth and brilliance.
In the end, each piece is more than just an animal, it is a character with a story, often a little surreal, always full of personality.
Got an idea? Let’s make it happen.
